Here at Blacklick Community United Methodist Church, young members have been striving to incorporate the use of modern technology into the church since 2011. It all began with video chats with then Rev. Jonathan Bell while he was serving our country over seas. Coordinated by DJ Rodkey (14), these video chats were conducted in the main sanctuary via ooVoo. Back then, we only had a projector and a pull down screen. These video chats helped everyone get through Rev. Bell’s deployment. With today’s upgraded technology, it would be much easier to do an online video chat than it was in 2011.

In 2014 after a presentation from then Youth Representative DJ Rodkey (17), the Administrative Council voted to purchase the current main video system pending a congregational vote. After another presentation from the Youth Representative, the main video system was donated in Honor of Marie Plowman and in Memory of Melvin Plowman. The additional TV’s were also donated following this presentation by the Robert Marshal Family in Memory of Lloyd and Grace Edminston and Glenn and Rita Marshall. Therefore, we did not need a congregational vote. The system is operated  on a weekly basis and maintained by DJ Rodkey, Technology Coordinator. This position is not paid and is completely voluntary. The Technology Coordinator also acts as the chairman of the Technology Committee, which oversees all technology within the church. The system is also operated on an as needed basis by members of the Technology Committee and trained AV Operators who are all volunteers.

In 2015 with the hiring of DJ Rodkey (18) as Church Secretary, the council voted to purchase this website through Rodkey Media. In 2016 with the creation of the Technology Committee, it was clear that we needed a better camera. So, a new HD PTZ camera and an 8 channel DVR were donated in Memory of Marie Plowman by Mark Plowman, her grandson. Also, we have recently purchased the complete United Methodist Hymnal in a digital version for on the screens as well as the digital version of the Faith We Sing book. This will eliminate any differences between the lyrics in the hymnals and the lyrics in Easy Worship.

Now in 2016, Mr. Rodkey (19) resigned from the Church Secretary position and the voluntary Technology Coordinator position in July. He has taken on a new position with Pinnacle Venue Services for Grace UMC’s services at the Kovalchick Center. All technology operations and responsibilities not affiliated with Rodkey Media will be deferred to the Technology Committee, and a new chairperson should be chosen.
